Music Is Good for the Soul, and Your Health
March 12, 2020 - 10:00 AM
Research demonstrates music therapy provides a wide range of benefits. We’ve all heard the idiom, “Music is good for the soul.” But according to the evidence, it’s good for your health as well. Study after study has found that music therapy has a positive effect on a broad range of physical and psychological conditions including dementia, anxiety, depression, and cancer. Music therapy is a service that can be delivered by psychologists, therpaists, or caregivers in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and even outpatient clinics. The goal is to improve people’s health through music experiences such as free improvisation,......
Sunday Routine: Relaxation and Motivation
March 08, 2020 - 10:00 AM
written by Auriel Simmonds Ah, Sunday. One of the best and worst days of the week. It’s the one day that you’re allowed to lounge around the house in your pajamas. All day. And without feeling as though you’re wasting time. But Sunday is also the best day to reset your mind and body and prepare yourself for the week ahead. It doesn’t have to be a day of nothing. It can still be relaxing and full of calmness that the busy, working week doesn’t allow for. But it can also help encourage you to feel motivated for the week to come. Plan The Week Ahead, Realistically. On Sundays, you may feel like the last thing you want to......
Where Does the Path of Mindfulness Lead?
March 05, 2020 - 10:00 AM
BY Editor-In-Chief Barry Boyce While there’s no roadmap to wisdom, there is a path to greater perspective, insight, and emotional freedom. Founding editor Barry Boyce calls on his four decades of practice to take us on the journey. In my experience most people who start practicing meditation find it, at first, to be an unusual or unnatural experience. Asked to sit still and pay attention to our breath repeatedly, most of us will formulate some version of the thought, “Why would I do this?” and after a little while, “Why would I keep doing this?” It feels like an artificial, contrived activity. “I don’t want to do......
How Reliable is Music Therapy?
March 01, 2020 - 03:22 PM
From JB Music Therapy RELIABLE adjective consistently good in quality or performance; able to be trusted. All services, including therapy, are judged on the skills, quality, and outcomes of the service/provider. For this blog post, I take the #caseformusictherapy on a journey through the lens of where most service-based choices are made – safety, outcomes and customer satisfaction experience. Safety After a quick Google search on whether music therapy is deemed safe, I found Healthlink BC who makes the following statement: Music therapy is considered safe. The Cleveland Clinic expands on this statement by making a list of what music can do: Affect the......
3 Intriguing Connections Between Music and Sleep
February 13, 2020 - 03:56 PM
The latest insights into how music affects you at bedtime and during sleep. Babies aren’t the only ones who love lullabies. Many people of all ages use music to improve their sleep. And sleep researchers are finding growing evidence to support this approach. Studies show that listening to or relaxing with music may be helpful even for those with short-term or long-lasting sleep disorders. For example, a recent analysis of published studies found that music offers clear benefits for primary insomnia—difficulty falling or staying asleep that isn’t due to medical problems, medications, or other substances. Yet much remains to be learned about exactly how......
The Overlooked Medicinal Impact of Music and Diet
November 06, 2019 - 09:12 PM
By: Richard K. Yu Music, diet, sleep, and stress all have a messy, but interconnected tangle of relationships with each other. Let’s demystify some of these connections. It’s two in the morning and you wake up groggily to the sounds of your stomach and the low hum of your refrigerator as you look for something to sate your appetite. Have you ever wondered in moments like these if they’re something wrong with this picture, even though it almost symbolizes the mundane aspects of life? The little things in life like music and a regular diet may play a bigger role in your overall health and wellness than you think. The Relationship Between Music and Stress......
Can Music Help You Calm Down and Sleep Better?
October 15, 2019 - 08:59 PM
Having trouble sleeping can have wide-ranging, negative effects on your health, so it's something that you should take seriously. For instance, it makes you less safe behind the wheel and increases your long-term risk of medical conditions such as obesity and heart disease. Though medical sleep aids may work quickly to help you drift off, they can have side effects and aren't good to use in the long term. Luckily, there is another treatment for sleepless nights that's cheap, isn't habit-forming, and has absolutely no negative side effects: music. Music is more than something that's simply enjoyable to listen to. It has a direct effect on the parasympathetic nervous system,......
90-year-old Completes Master's Degree On Music and Dementia
September 22, 2019 - 04:50 PM
Matthew Lorenzon Dementia affects more than 400,000 people in Australia. Inspired by the powerful effects of music in nursing homes, Lorna Prendergast undertook a Master of Ageing degree at the University of Melbourne. She graduated in July at the age of 90. Prendergast enrolled in the degree after watching an ABC science program about music and dementia. She completed the course online from the Victorian town of Bairnsdale, overcoming technological hurdles that would challenge many others. Music technology provides sound opportunities Prendergast studied the effects of music therapy in nursing homes, including the delivery of personalised playlists using music......
Keep Your Brain Young with Music
September 22, 2019 - 12:03 PM
If you want to firm up your body, head to the gym. If you want to exercise your brain, listen to music. “There are few things that stimulate the brain the way music does,” says one Johns Hopkins otolaryngologist. “If you want to keep your brain engaged throughout the aging process, listening to or playing music is a great tool. It provides a total brain workout.” Research has shown that listening to music can reduce anxiety, blood pressure, and pain as well as improve sleep quality, mood, mental alertness, and memory. The Brain-Music Connection Experts are trying to understand how our brains can hear and play music. A stereo system puts out vibrations......
Music as Therapy: The Uses and Benefits of Sound Healing
July 29, 2019 - 11:00 AM
What is sound healing therapy? Sound healing therapy uses aspects of music to improve your physical and emotional health and well-being. The person being treated partakes in the experience with a trained sound healing practitioner. Sound healing may involve: listening to music singing along to music moving to the beat of the music meditating playing an instrument There are different types of sound therapy, including vibrational sound therapy, which uses special sounds that produce vibrations thought to improve brain waves.
